    Abstract Applique

Mother Nature is the supreme designer. In this class, we will be focusing on some of those amazing details to create abstract fabric compositions. Bring close-up photos of bugs, butterflies, flowers, leaves, etc. From these, we will extract patterns, colors, and shapes and mix them into exciting nonrepresentational compositions. Eventually, these compositions will be transformed into appliqued fabric and thread collages. This is a painless way to learn Jane’s very accessible applique technique and perhaps even try some of those unused stitches on your sewing machine.

    Full Tilt

We will be playing with circles and wedges, colour and transparency. The circular wedge blocks will be multiplied and flipped, cut down, and reassembled to create a kaleidoscope of colour. This is also a two-in-one design where the cut-offs create a second, surprise design. Amongst the many techniques and skills covered in this class are no-pin curves, seam matching, pressing, colour work, composition, and construction. Individuality is highly encouraged, and Jenny will show you how you can transform the design by altering the colours, changing the colour placement, or using prints, solids, or a mix of both.

    Improv Design from Nature

In this class, you’ll explore abstract design through improv-style paper piecing, using nature photos—plants, animals, or landscapes—as inspiration. You will learn to create unique paper pieced blocks based on rhythm, movement, and shape rather than realism. We’ll use two main colors: one for the subject, one for the background, each with 6–8 values. Hand-dyed or solid fabrics work best. You’ll design several blocks from various images, resizing and reinterpreting them to create visually interesting compositions. Then we will use them to design a larger piece, adding in some improv connecting strips.
